Cars 3: Driven to Win

Cars 3 was recently released (June 16, 2017) and it was described as “the best Cars movie to date”! So naturally we couldn’t wait to get our hands on the new Cars 3 video game. Cars 3: Driven to Win is an all-new action-packed racing game inspired by the Disney Pixar film. There are over 20 customizable characters including Lightning McQueen, Cruz Ramirez, and Jackson Storm as well as over 20 iconic tracks such as Radiator Springs and Florida International Speedway! We were given a code for the PS4 version of this game, so we immediately jumped right in and began to check it out.

I must say that we were extremely impressed by the game’s graphics. The graphics were beautiful and the colorful style is perfect for attracting younger gamers like my daughter and my nephew. As the game started, I was a bit disappointed in the lack of an actual story. There are a few references here and there that tie the game to the movie, however there is not much of a plot overall. After the quick intro, we were able to choose from six different game modes. To test it out, we decided to do a basic race which was quite fun. The easy mode was exactly what the kids needed, however I was quite surprised at the actual difficulty in medium and hard mode.

Game Modes:

  • Stunt Showcase: Catch air and perform as many stunts and tricks to get the highest score.
  • Takedown: Collect and use a variety of power-ups to eliminate as many crash karts as possible to get the highest score.
  • Best Lap Challenge: Beat your prime time score to set an all-time new record.
  • Race: Hop into the tracks against Lightning McQueen and the gang to rev up for the ultimate challenge.
  • Battle Race: Put your training to the test and race against your family and friends to become the ultimate champion.
  •  Playground: Practice stunts, engage in challenges or simply cruise at your own pace for endless fun.

There are lots of ways to explore and unlock parts of the game. For example, every time you place in the top 5 racers you are rewarded with XP. You can use XP unlock fun rewards and accessories in the game. Throughout the game you can also unlock  achievements such as driving backwards and drifting, which in turn will unlock more of the game as you progress. The “Hall of Fame” allowed us to keep track of achievements throughout our gameplay and gave us more fun little competitions and skill checks to try and beat.  I thought this was awesome, especially for the kids in the household.  The challenges kept my daughter and my nephew busy for hours.cars 011.jpg

Overall, Cars 3: Driven to Win is the perfect addition to our gaming collection. Not only were the graphics outstanding, but the gameplay was awesome and I was genuinely impressed with the amount of skill needed to progress. This game was given two thumbs up from everyone in my home. This is definitely a must play for children and adults of all ages!
