This is a guest post provided by Attention To Detail Moving
Whether you are moving away from home, to a new city, or even a new area, moving is inherently expensive. In addition to the new security deposit and the first and last month’s’ rent, there are the costs of packing and moving your belongings. Fortunately, there are a few ways to save money on moving expenses.
- Declutter: You will need to sort your things anyway, so make sure to get rid of things that you don’t need- which may or may not include old furniture. Having less to move will save you on moving costs and hassle, and you can even earn some money by holding a garage sale or selling some of old stuff online.
- Bargain Hunt for Cheap Movers: With a bit of research and critical thinking, you can find a moving company that has the best service for your needs for the lowest price. Consider whether you want to be charged by hour or by mile- this may depend on traffic- and plan your move accordingly as you survey moving companies. Hollywood, for instance, is a high traffic area so if you aren’t moving far, you may wish to avoid moving during weekday rush hour.
- Scavenge: The cost of moving boxes can quickly add up. Instead of buying all of your boxes, try to repurpose some used ones. Ask your co-workers to save boxes from the printer paper, and check with your local stores to see if they have any clean cardboard boxes that they are willing to give. With a bit of luck, you may be able to cross moving boxes off your expense list altogether.
Change can be tough, but a bit of extra foresight, planning and a bit of bargain hunting can make you move with peace of mind and a bit of extra cash in your wallet.

You hit the nail on the head with decluttering! Moving is the perfect time to get things back under control, and get rid of anything that’s holding you down. It feels so nice to donate, give away or throw away excess baggage – things you just don’t really need!

Yes to all the above. I have moved a few times in my life. It is so much easier to declutter and move less then to pack and move junk. I have been at my current location for over 10 years but forsee at least 2 more moves.

Ugh, moving is the worst. We’re military so we usually get a company contracted through them, and sometimes they suck.
